A pet owner is relating her terrifying ordeal and advising others to beware after her little dog narrowly escaped a suspected drug poisoning attack during a recent stroll near a neighborhood school.
Small Dog Suddenly Becomes Ill While Walking Near a School
The shocking incident recently occurred on a road close to a school. The owner of the dog, Nadia Alterio, recalled the frightening experience when her tiny dog fell ill all of a sudden after apparently consuming a powdery substance lying on the road.
“All of a sudden our little dog approached us and she was totally out of it,” Alterio explained. “Her tongue was hanging straight out, she couldn’t even walk. She had no control of her body.”

Rapid Vet Assistance and an Antidote Save the Dog’s Life
Realizing the seriousness of her dog’s situation, Alterio took her to a nearby veterinary clinic. The veterinarians there immediately identified the symptoms as probable drug poisoning and gave her an antidote, a medication that reverses the effects of some drug overdoses, right away.
“She immediately returned. We didn’t expect her to recover,” said a relieved Alterio. “She is fine now. We couldn’t believe it. The antidote was what saved her.”
Owner Warns Others About Dangers in Public Places
Now, Nadia Alterio is courageously speaking out to inform other pet owners of the possible risks of toxic substances that may be present in public spaces. She is calling on everyone to be more vigilant when taking their pets for a walk and to observe what their pets may be sniffing or attempting to ingest.
“The vets are the heroes,” Alterio added, thanking them for the speedy and effective treatment her dog was given.
A Strong Reminder of Hidden Dangers
This close-tragedy is a good reminder of the dangers that lie concealed in what appears to be ordinary public spaces. Inadvertently consuming discarded drugs is a real risk for pets, who navigate their environment by scent and tend not to have any idea what they’re picking up. This accident is a good illustration of just how essential it is to responsibly dispose of medications and for everyone to be more mindful of the potential for harm to animals.
Local pet owners and others are urged to be particularly vigilant when out walking and to seek immediate veterinary assistance if their pet develops any unusual and concerning symptoms. The swift response in this instance obviously saved the dog’s life.
