In a poignant tale of resilience and hope, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Billy has been reunited with her owner, Rachel Dancyg, after an 18-month separation caused by the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel.
The Day Everything Changed
During the harrowing attack, Rachel sought refuge in a safe room with her family. Amid the chaos, her ex-husband, Alex Dancyg, and her brother, Itzhak Elgarat, were abducted and later confirmed dead. In the turmoil, Billy vanished, leaving the family to fear the worst.

Fast forward to April 2025, IDF reserve soldier Aviad Shapira, while operating in Rafah, Gaza, encountered a stray dog that approached his unit upon hearing Hebrew. Recognizing the dog’s unusual behavior, Shapira took her to a veterinarian, where a microchip scan revealed her identity as Billy.
Upon receiving the news, Rachel and her family were overwhelmed with emotion. “It’s a miracle,” Rachel expressed. “It doesn’t make sense … People didn’t survive. How did she?” The family, who had adopted another dog of the same breed during Billy’s absence, now embraces both pets, finding solace in their companionship.
The Road to Recovery
While Billy is back home, she shows signs of trauma disorientation and weight loss. As a pet expert, I advise a gradual reintroduction to her environment, consistent routines, and patience. Professional veterinary care and behavioral therapy may also aid in her recovery.
Billy’s return offers a glimmer of hope amidst ongoing conflict. The Nir Oz community aptly described the reunion as “a little light in a lot of sorrow,” reminding us of the enduring bond between humans and their pets.
